it depends on where you want to go. for most people the best use of 100,000 Membership Rewards points is a transfer to an airline for a business class seat: a round trip to Japan on ANA in low season, or a one-way business seat to Europe through Air Canada Aeroplan with points to spare. if you want hotel nights, 100k points become 200,000 Hilton Honors points. gift cards and statement credits are the easy option, but they're worth a lot less.
ANA's own chart prices a round trip in business class between North America and Japan at 100,000 miles in low season, 105,000 in regular season and 110,000 in high season, on ANA-operated flights. Taxes and fuel surcharges are extra.
business class to Europe through Air Canada Aeroplan
70,000 to 75,000 Aeroplan points one way
Aeroplan prices partner flights by distance. A one-way business class seat from North America to Europe on a partner airline like Lufthansa, Swiss or United costs 70,000 points up to 4,000 miles flown and 75,000 points from 4,001 to 6,000 miles. Taxes and fees are extra.
transferring before you find a seat. transfers to airlines and hotels can't be undone, so find the award first.
gift cards, shopping and statement credits. they're easy, but they usually get you much less than a flight or hotel transfer.
booking an award without comparing programs. the same seat can cost very different amounts through different partners.
Pay with Points at checkout. it's convenient, and it's one of the lowest value ways to spend Membership Rewards.
